FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
The Armory Art Center to Host Exhibition of Caribbean Artists Living in South Florida.
WEST PALM BEACH, FL, November 22, 2016. The Armory will present Champions: Caribbean Artists Breaking Boundaries in South Florida from January 14 through February 11, 2017. The opening reception is on Friday, January 13 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Champions celebrates the work of contemporary Caribbean artists living in South Florida. As Liza Niles, Chief of Education and Exhibitions at the Armory says, “the influx of immigrants from Caribbean countries to Florida is not a new phenomenon. However, we are witnessing a surge of expression in the work of contemporary artists who are part of the movement. Whether the artists have relocated here for their art career or as part of a generation immigrating to the United States—their work can find no other urban art arena that more fully supports their vision than South Florida.” In this exhibition artists will present complex identity narratives through their use of space, location, and observation. The exhibition will host a range of work in painting, photography, sculpture, video, and installation art. A series of educational programs will complement the exhibition and artists.
Jane Hart, the curator of this exhibition, has over 30 years of professional experience and expertise and is active in the contemporary art field in New York City, Los Angeles, London, and South Florida. For nearly a decade she served as the Curator of Exhibitions at the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood, Florida. During her tenure at the Center, Hart curated over 100 exhibitions. Most recently Ms. Hart was named Curator of the Year by the New York Times. Her experience around the world and a decade of service at the Cultural Center of Hollywood, FL make her uniquely qualified to direct this exhibition. About this upcoming exhibition, Jane says that “Artists will exhibit their work for the first time as a group. Visitors have the opportunity to view a dynamic collection of artistry flavored by Caribbean roots and combined with the broader cultural landscape of Southern Florida.”
Jane Hart will also present at the Armory Art Salon on Tuesday, February 7th from 6:30 – 8:30 pm. Art Salons presenters show their work and talk about their influences followed by stimulating discussions.
