Ikebana is a Japanese art of flower arrangement. Unlike other floral arrangement styles, ikebana often emphasizes areas of the plant other than blooms, placing more emphasis on shape, line, and form. This class will begin with the guided construction of a clay vessel using foliage from the gardens to imprint design elements. Upon completion, a demonstration will be given in how to create different ikebana arrangements. The clay vessels will then be glazed, fired, and returned to the Mounts Botanical Garden where students may retrieve their finished ceramic project five days after the completion of the workshop. Students will then be ready to further explore ikebana arranging techniques using their finished ceramics pieces.

You will spend the first couple of hours exploring painting and printing and then you will turn these paintings into pages of embellished artists’ books. Each student will work on two books over the course of the two days, while learning useful techniques in binding, collage, and low-tech printing. Have a theme in mind and your books will evolve organically.

In this workshop students will use mosaics to bring a touch of color and character to their garden. Pathways, pavers, planters, concrete figures, and many other items in your garden have the potential to contribute to a garden becoming a work of art. Students will learn the process of planning a pattern, breaking ceramic pieces, and applying mosaics onto three-dimensional forms. Mosaics will be applied to planters for practice and then the class will use small and mid-sized objects brought in by students. Students can use objects such as small tables, birdbaths, planters, and small concrete animal sculptures to create an overall artistic vision of their garden. Students are encouraged to bring in an assortment of their favorite tiles in order to help build a pattern. Some additional forms and tile pieces will be provided to supplement what students bring. At the conclusion of the workshop planters will be filled with beautiful plants. All finished pieces will be available for pick up once the tiles are fully set.
